WF II: Erlang Blues (9/22)

Dear Erlang I: · I like you. Really, I do. But until you can read lines of text out of a file and do basic pattern-matching against them acceptably fast (which most people would say is faster than Ruby), you’re stuck in a niche; you’re a thought experiment and a consciousness-raiser and an engineering showpiece, but you’re not a general-purpose tool. Sorry.

WF XI: Results (10/30)

Erlang 6.46
Ruby 50.16

Analysis · Are you kidding me!?!? Getouttahere. Maybe someday.

“Facts in isolation are false” - Wendell Berry

Have you seen the code for the erlang version? (http://programming.reddit.com/info/5ziwb/comments/c02cgmg) Its been through a few iterations..

Yeah, I’ve been following the mailing list discussion. The code is indeed long. And I agree with the Wendell Berry quote in the sense that think it’s wrong to judge a language based on a single micro-benchmark. I think Tim Bray should have avoided making such decisive conclusions about Erlang writing a single 20-line utility in it. He was setting himself up for rebuttal.
